Gluconolactone exhibits excellent moisturizing properties. With multiple hydroxyl groups, it can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, thereby effectively helping maintain skin moisture. Although the exfoliating effect of gluconolactone is relatively gradual, it can gently remove accumulated dead skin cells and improve skin absorption capacity.

Gluconolactone can reduce irritation caused by other cosmetic ingredients, enhance skin barrier function, and help minimize skin redness and stinging sensations. According to the study by Hunt M J. et al., 14% gluconolactone demonstrated comparable anti-acne efficacy to 5% benzoyl peroxide, while showing significantly lower irritation potential, suggesting that gluconolactone can serve as an effective alternative approach for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.
