What does the evidence show?
4-Butylresorcinol has been studied for its effects on tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1), enzymes involved in melanin synthesis. A small randomized split-face study of a 0.1% cream reported improvement in melasma measures over eight weeks. Another clinical study reported visible improvement in age spots with a formula containing the ingredient. Results from those specific products should not be assumed for every formula, concentration or user.
Read the 0.1% cream study e il tyrosinase and age-spot study for the study designs and limitations.
Formulation and safety assessment
Select the use level for the intended product, market and target user through a documented formulation and safety assessment. Published studies at particular concentrations are not universal maximum-safe-use limits. Request the current TDS, SDS and COA before setting a specification or making a finished-product claim.
Check dissolution, color, pH, packaging and compatibility in the complete formula under relevant storage conditions. Whether a chelator or antioxidant is useful depends on the full formula and stability results; neither EDTA disodium nor a fixed antioxidant dose should be treated as mandatory for every product.
