α-Arbutin (also known as Arbutin) is primarily extracted from the leaves of the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). It rapidly penetrates the skin without compromising cell integrity, then binds to tyrosinase—the key enzyme in melanin production—effectively inhibiting its activity. This suppresses melanin synthesis while also accelerating melanin breakdown and elimination. Additionally, Arbutin helps protect the skin from free radical damage. With its excellent hydrophilic properties, it is widely used in skin brightening products and is particularly popular in Asian countries—notably as the signature brightening ingredient in Shiseido formulations.
