Quaternium-73 vs Polyquaternium-73: Verify the INCI Name

Cuaternio-73

Quaternium-73 and “Polyquaternium-73” are not interchangeable names. ZLEY’s current technical data sheet identifies its ingredient as Quaternium-73, CAS 15763-48-1. If a quotation, search result or inventory record says “Polyquaternium-73,” do not assume it refers to the same material: request the supplier’s exact INCI name, CAS number and technical documents before approving it.

What is Quaternium-73?

PubChem lists Quaternium-73, also known as Pionin, with CAS 15763-48-1 and molecular formula C23H39IN2S2. ZLEY’s published TDS gives the same INCI name and CAS number. It describes the supplied material as a yellowish to yellow crystalline powder with an HPLC purity specification of at least 98%. These identifiers are more reliable than a marketing shorthand or a similar-sounding product name.

What does “Polyquaternium-73” mean in a purchase request?

“Polyquaternium” is used for a family of named cationic polymers in personal care, but that general family name does not establish the identity, function or safety profile of any specific material. We did not find “Polyquaternium-73” as an alternate name in ZLEY’s Quaternium-73 TDS or SDS. A buyer who encounters the phrase should ask the seller which INCI entry and CAS number they actually mean. Until those match, do not substitute a polymer for Quaternium-73 or copy one material’s documentation to the other.

How does ZLEY suggest formulating Quaternium-73?

The supplier TDS suggests 0.001–0.05% use and recommends predissolving the raw material in ethanol, butanediol or glutarediol before adding it to a formula. This is supplier guidance, not a blanket regulatory maximum or a promise of performance. Confirm the current batch specification and test solubility, color, pH compatibility, stability and finished-product skin tolerance. The SDS flags skin, eye and respiratory irritation hazards while handling the concentrated raw material; that hazard information should inform workplace controls and should not be confused with a finished-product safety assessment.

How should claims be handled?

ZLEY positions Quaternium-73 for oil-control and acne-prone skincare concepts. The published TDS also describes antimicrobial and acne-related activity, but its marketing descriptions do not by themselves establish the clinical performance or legal classification of a finished cosmetic. Claims such as treating acne, killing specific bacteria or preventing breakouts require product-specific evidence and review under the rules of the intended market. Formulators can begin with a clear cosmetic concept, then validate the actual formula and claim language.

Procurement checklist

  • Match the INCI name and CAS number across the quote, COA, TDS, SDS and label file.
  • Check the current assay, appearance, storage guidance and recommended processing conditions.
  • Trial the material in the intended base and final package, including stability and tolerance tests.
  • Review local restrictions and claim rules before launch.
